Shockwave Therapy in Livermore, CA
FDA-cleared, drug-free treatment for the chronic tendon, fascia, and soft-tissue injuries that haven't responded to rest, stretching, or injections.
Shockwave therapy is one of the most effective treatments available for the stubborn, long-standing pain that other approaches haven't fixed — chronic plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, calcific shoulder tendinitis, and similar injuries that get stuck in a chronic inflammation loop. At Balanced Livermore Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, shockwave is included as part of your regular chiropractic or rehabilitation visit whenever it's clinically appropriate — no separate appointment, no add-on fee, no upsell. Most patients see a meaningful change in 3 to 6 weekly sessions. No medication, no needles, no downtime.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy — also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy, or ESWT — uses high-energy acoustic pressure waves delivered through a hand-held applicator to specific points of injured tissue. The waves create controlled micro-trauma that triggers the body's own healing response: blood flow increases to the area, new blood vessels form, scar tissue and calcium deposits break down, and chronic inflammation finally resolves.
It's the same underlying technology that's been used in medicine for decades to break up kidney stones, scaled down and tuned for musculoskeletal use. The FDA has cleared shockwave devices for treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis and chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), and clinical evidence supports its use for a much wider range of tendon and soft-tissue injuries.
The crucial distinction: shockwave doesn't just mask pain. It works by kickstarting a healing response in tissue that's been stuck in chronic inflammation. That's why it can resolve injuries that have been around for months or years.
Shockwave is included with your regular visit
Shockwave is included with your regular visit
We made this decision deliberately. Shockwave works best when it's layered into a comprehensive plan alongside chiropractic adjustments, rehab exercise, ART, or Graston — not when it's siloed as a premium-priced add-on. Integrating it lets us use it the moment your case calls for it, instead of waiting for a separate booking.
Balanced Livermore is a listed shockwave provider on the official shockwavecenters.com clinic directory — you can verify our credentials and equipment there.
How shockwave works (in plain English)
A typical treatment lasts about 5 to 10 minutes per area. Most patients come in once a week for 3 to 6 weeks. After each session, you can walk out and resume normal activity immediately — no anesthesia, no recovery period.
Conditions we treat with shockwave at Balanced Livermore
- Plantar fasciitis (chronic heel pain) — the most clinically validated use of shockwave
- Achilles tendinopathy and chronic Achilles pain
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy and chronic shoulder pain
- Calcific shoulder tendinitis (shockwave can actually break up the calcium deposit)
- Patellar tendinopathy ("jumper's knee")
- IT band syndrome and chronic outer-knee pain
- Hamstring tendinopathy and high hamstring pain
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (chronic hip pain)
- Chronic neck and upper-back trigger points that haven't resolved with manual therapy
- Bone stress injuries and stress reactions (with imaging confirmation)
- Scar tissue restricting mobility after old injuries or surgeries
What to expect during a shockwave session
- Brief exam and confirmation of the treatment area. Your provider re-tests the painful movement so we can compare it after.
- Ultrasound gel applied to the skin over the target tissue.
- The applicator is placed against the skin and energy is dialed up to your tolerance. You'll feel rapid thumping — strong but not sharp. Most patients describe it as "intense pressure" rather than "pain."
- Treatment lasts 5 to 10 minutes per area. We typically deliver 1,500 to 3,000 pulses per session, adjusted to your tissue and condition.
- A quick reassessment of your symptoms before you leave, and aftercare guidance for the next 48 hours.
Aftercare for the 48 hours after each session:
- Avoid anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin). They blunt the healing response shockwave is trying to trigger. Tylenol/acetaminophen is fine if needed.
- Avoid ice on the treated area for the same reason.
- Normal walking, daily activity, and gentle movement is fine — often encouraged.
- Hold off on heavy loading of the treated structure (running, max lifts, sprints) for 48 hours. Resume normal training after that.
Why Balanced Livermore for shockwave
Who's a good candidate for shockwave therapy?
- Included with your regular visit — no separate appointment, no $100–300 add-on fee. Most clinics charge separately for shockwave; we integrate it into the care you're already getting.
- Listed shockwave provider on the official shockwavecenters.com directory — real, verifiable credentials and equipment, not just a marketing claim.
- We own the equipment in-house and use it weekly. Many clinics that "offer shockwave" actually refer out or rent the device occasionally.
- Shockwave is paired with chiropractic care, rehab exercise, ART, or Graston when your case calls for it — so each session compounds rather than working in isolation.
- Clear treatment plans. After your first exam you'll know exactly how many sessions we recommend and what we expect to see at each milestone. No open-ended packages.
- Visit-over-visit measurement. We re-test the painful movement at the start of every appointment so you (and we) can see whether shockwave is actually moving the needle.
- Honest about candidacy. If we don't think shockwave is right for your case at the first visit, we'll tell you and recommend the path that will actually work.
- You've had pain in the same spot for more than 6 weeks and rest, stretching, or anti-inflammatories haven't resolved it.
- You have a tendinopathy or chronic soft-tissue injury that imaging or clinical exam has identified.
- You've already tried cortisone or physical therapy without lasting relief.
- You want a drug-free, non-injection, non-surgical option before considering more invasive care.
- You can commit to 3 to 6 weekly sessions and stay off anti-inflammatories during the treatment window.
- You're pregnant.
- You have a bleeding disorder or are on therapeutic doses of blood thinners.
- The treatment area contains a pacemaker, implant, or active cancer.
- You have an open wound, active skin infection, or rash over the target area.
- Your pain is brand new (less than a couple weeks old). Acute injuries usually need rest and time first — shockwave shines on chronic patterns.
