Chiropractic care is a licensed healthcare profession focused on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions — especially of the spine, joints, and surrounding soft tissue — through manual adjustments, mobilization, and rehabilitation. Chiropractors are doctors of chiropractic (D.C.) trained to evaluate how the spine, nervous system, and muscles work together, and to restore movement and reduce pain without medication or surgery.
Modern chiropractic care isn't just about “cracking your back.” At Balanced Livermore, an adjustment is one tool inside a larger plan — alongside soft-tissue work, traction, rehabilitation exercises, and education — designed to address the root cause of your pain, not just the symptoms.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Most chiropractic visits in the U.S. last 2–5 minutes and end with an adjustment. Research consistently shows that adjustments alone aren't enough to fix or prevent injuries long term. That's why every chiropractic appointment at Balanced Livermore is a combination of:

  • A precise chiropractic adjustment (only when it's needed and safe)
  • Soft-tissue and muscle work — including Active Release Technique (ART), cupping, and Graston
  • Spinal traction, electrical muscle stimulation, and other physiotherapy modalities when indicated
  • Rehabilitation exercises you can take home and actually use
  • Time. Returning visits are a full 30 minutes — not 5.

We don't sell big prepaid treatment packages. We don't require x-rays to begin care. We don't use one-size-fits-all protocols. We will tell you, honestly, how long we think your care will take — and if chiropractic isn't the right fit for what you're dealing with, we'll refer you to someone who is.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

There's no one right way to deliver a chiropractic adjustment. The technique we choose depends on your body, your condition, and what you're comfortable with. Our Livermore chiropractors are trained in multiple methods so we can match the right approach to each patient.

Common techniques you'll see at Balanced Livermore include:

The most widely used chiropractic technique, involving a quick, controlled thrust to a specific joint to restore motion. This is the “classic” adjustment most patients are familiar with.
A low-force, instrument-based adjustment delivered with a small, hand-held device. The Activator is a great option if you prefer not to be manually adjusted, are pregnant, have osteoporosis or other conditions that make traditional adjustments unsafe, or simply find manual adjustments uncomfortable.

A specialized prenatal chiropractic technique focused on the alignment of the sacrum and pelvis during pregnancy. Webster-certified care helps support comfort throughout pregnancy and optimal positioning for birth. Dr. Sabena Chahal and Dr. Breanna Murphy are both Webster-certified.
A gentle, full-spine traction technique that decompresses the vertebrae using a controlled pulling motion at the base of the skull. It can offer quick relief for pressure on spinal discs and nerves.
Important: adjustments are not required for every patient. If you'd rather not be adjusted, we have plenty of other tools — soft-tissue work, rehab, traction, and modalities — that can address your pain effectively.

Types of Adjustments We Use at Balanced Livermore

Your first visit is longer than a typical appointment — plan for one to one and a half hours in the office. Here's what to expect:
  • A thorough history and conversation about your goals, your pain, and what you've already tried.
  • A hands-on exam including muscle and posture testing, movement screens, and orthopedic tests as needed. (No x-rays are required to begin care; if imaging is necessary, we'll refer you out.)
  • A clear, honest treatment plan — how long we think it will take, what we'll do at each visit, and how we'll measure progress.
  • Your first treatment, the same day. It typically begins with about 10 minutes of electrical stimulation and heat to warm the area, followed by the combination of adjustment, soft-tissue work, stretching, and rehabilitation that fits your case.
  • Stretches or exercises to start at home so your care doesn't stop when you leave.

Follow-up visits are 30 minutes and include all the modalities needed for that day — not just a quick adjustment.

No. Most patients do not need x-rays for a safe and accurate diagnosis. We use research-backed muscle, posture, and movement testing to evaluate your condition. If imaging is medically necessary (for example, after significant trauma, or if we suspect a fracture, scoliosis, or osteoporosis), we'll refer you out to a qualified imaging center.
Yes. When performed by a licensed doctor of chiropractic and matched to your condition, adjustments are very safe. Before any adjustment, our doctors evaluate whether it's appropriate and choose a technique — Diversified, Activator, Thompson Drop, or another — based on what's safest and most effective for you.
It depends on the condition, how long you've been dealing with it, and how you respond to the first few visits. We'll give you an honest treatment plan after your initial exam — and we don't sell large prepaid packages. If you're feeling better and don't need to come back, we'll tell you.
Two key differences. First, every visit combines chiropractic care with rehabilitation and soft-tissue work, not just a quick adjustment. Second, our follow-up visits are 30 minutes — long enough to actually address the root cause, not just the symptom. We also do not require x-rays and do not sell prepaid treatment packages.
We bill most major insurances, including Medicare, BCBS, Anthem, Cigna, Meritain, Aetna, United Healthcare, ILWU, and auto insurance for accident-related care. Kaiser members are welcome at a discounted private-pay rate, with no referral required. Call (925) 273-7016 for a complimentary insurance verification.
Yes. Dr. Sabena Chahal and Dr. Breanna Murphy are both Webster-certified, a prenatal chiropractic technique specifically developed to support comfort during pregnancy and optimal pelvic alignment for birth. Our tables are equipped with pregnancy accommodations, and the Activator method is available for areas where traditional adjustments may not be appropriate.
Physical therapy is best for patients who need 1:1 exercise therapy — particularly after surgery or significant injury. Chiropractic care, especially at Balanced Livermore, emphasizes manual, hands-on treatment of joints and soft tissue along with rehabilitation. The two professions overlap and often complement each other; if you'd benefit more from one than the other, we'll tell you.
